Women are gaining huge benefits from business networking, according to new research

According to research conducted by Women Unlimited, as many as 85% of women in business have seen a significant benefit from attending networking events. One in five make more than £10,000 in a year through sales as a result of the events.

The research has been conducted as a response to a Times article published in March that stated that women are naturally bad networkers, needing to overcome their fear of socialising and ‘start schmoozing like men’. Social media expert Liz Cable had said, “I think when women hear the phrase ‘social network’, they hear social. Men hear network.”

Even with emergence of social networking, SMEs consider business networking to be crucial to their success

Despite social media boom, SMEs still consider business networking vital to their success.

According to a survey conducted in 2009, where 500 small and medium businesses were questioned, two thirds of them are now networking in person at least once a week. 38% say that it is crucial to their business growth and that they are prepared to inject even more money into it, in pursuit of expanding their network.

51% of SME owners estimate that they pay between £100 and £499 a year, with 25% of SME owners saying that they spend more than £1000 on networking in person in a single year.

LinkedIn introduce new feature that will strengthen relationships between businesses

LinkedIn has recently launched a major update to their site which allows users to follow companies via a ‘Company Follow’ button.

The new feature that borrows heavily from the likes of Twitter and Facebook fan pages allows users to keep up-to-date with the events of each company. Rather than receiving status updates, as was the previous feature, users can now get information such as recent employments, new job opportunities, promotions and any company profile updates. Clicking on ‘follow’ will also allow you to see the amount of followers of that particular company and which company they belong to and their position.

Could Apple be about to launch into the social networking world?

Rumours are rife this week that Apple could be the latest player to launch into the social networking world.

The IT giant have applied for a patent for their iGroups social networking technology which could change the way people communicate at a networking event. The application will work with the iPhone and MobileMe and will allow groups of users in the same geographical location to exchange e-mails, contact information and messages via WiFi, Bluetooth and 3G. This means networkers will have the chance to chat to other members via their mobile devices and the technology could even make exchanging business cards a thing of the past. (more…)

Google set to launch into social networking

Fresh from the news that more and more SMEs are using social networking for business purposes, Google have announced plans to launch a similar programme to compete with the likes of Facebook and MySpace.

The Financial Times reports that the search engine giant is planning to add features to it’s already popular Gmail service which would mirror aspects of other social media sites. These would include allowing users to aggregate the updates of their various contacts and creating a stream of notifications, similar to those on Facebook. Google have attempted to get into the social networking world before but with little success. (more…)
