US founder of Business Network International, Dr Ivan Misner, has said that improper use of social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter is causing a backlash against business networking.
Social media sites allow businesspeople to contact and ‘tap up’ other companies that they have not built up trust with yet or have any kind of relationship with, otherwise known as ‘premature solicitation’.
Dr Misner said, “It comes from people who either practice premature solicitation or receive it and are frustrated.”

LinkedIn has recently launched a major update to their site which allows users to follow companies via a ‘Company Follow’ button.
The new feature that borrows heavily from the likes of Twitter and Facebook fan pages allows users to keep up-to-date with the events of each company. Rather than receiving status updates, as was the previous feature, users can now get information such as recent employments, new job opportunities, promotions and any company profile updates. Clicking on ‘follow’ will also allow you to see the amount of followers of that particular company and which company they belong to and their position.

If you’re addicted to business networking site LinkedIn you’ll be pleased to learn you can now access it on the go.
The world’s largest networking site has launched a new application this week which means you can now access all your favourite LinkedIn tools from the comfort of your Blackberry. The application features all the popular aspects of LinkedIn including network updates, messaging, search, connections and invitations. It also gives you the chance to use the “reconnection” tool which suggests possible new business contacts for your company. iPhone users were first introduced to the application 18 months ago, which has left many confused as to why it’s taken so long to build a Blackberry version. There’s no doubt about it – social networking sites are now a major part of our lives and are used by millions on a daily basis for a wide range of reasons. From sharing photos to catching up with our friends, it seems we really can’t get enough social networking action.
But while social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter boast tens of millions of users, it seems business networking sites haven’t fared that well in comparison. While LinkedIn has an impressive 3 million UK members and 60 million users worldwide, these figures pale into insignificance when you compare them to Facebook’s 23 million UK users and 300 million users worldwide. Imagine an e-mail system that allows you to manage all social media networks in one place… This week Microsoft announced changes to Outlook which will allow you to do just that.
The 500 million users of Outlook will soon be able to check their updates and notifications on popular business networking sites, such as Facebook and LinkedIn, without having to leave the comfort of their own e-mail system. This is great news for the growing number of businesses who rely on social media sites to stay in touch with key contacts. LinkedIn is possibly one of the largest business networking sites in the world. At the end of 2009 it had 50 million registered users spanning 200 countries worldwide.
Not bad for a site which was launched less than 10 years ago in California by Reid Hoffman. The site is so successful due to it’s great features which make online business networking easier than ever. Making and storing contacts is the biggest draw of LinkedIn, while it’s also a good platform for advertising and recruiting new employees. While LinkedIn is very easy to use, there are a few tips you can follow to make sure you get the most out of the site for business networking purposes. (more…)
