US founder of Business Network International, Dr Ivan Misner, has said that improper use of social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter is causing a backlash against business networking.
Social media sites allow businesspeople to contact and ‘tap up’ other companies that they have not built up trust with yet or have any kind of relationship with, otherwise known as ‘premature solicitation’.
Dr Misner said, “It comes from people who either practice premature solicitation or receive it and are frustrated.”

The recent credit crunch had a devastating effect on the UK economy and left many UK citizens fighting for a job. Although the economy is now in a state of recovery, many are still queuing up at the job centre in the hope of finding employment.
When you’re unemployed, becoming a recluse is the worst thing you can do. Research conducted recently in Denmark found that unemployed people were much more likely to find a job if they took part in some form of business networking, in addition to their traditional job search. Business networking consists largely of recommendations, such as “I know who you need” or “I’ve got just the person for the job”. There’s no doubt about it – social networking sites are now a major part of our lives and are used by millions on a daily basis for a wide range of reasons. From sharing photos to catching up with our friends, it seems we really can’t get enough social networking action.
But while social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter boast tens of millions of users, it seems business networking sites haven’t fared that well in comparison. Online networking and offline networking – they’re just an extension of the same thing, aren’t they? They might share many key objectives but there are major differences between the two.
There are many reasons why people might prefer to network online rather than offline and vice versa. In essence, it comes down to a matter of personal taste. Many argue that a personal bond can’t be formed until face to face contact is made. LinkedIn is possibly one of the largest business networking sites in the world. At the end of 2009 it had 50 million registered users spanning 200 countries worldwide.
Not bad for a site which was launched less than 10 years ago in California by Reid Hoffman. The site is so successful due to it’s great features which make online business networking easier than ever. Making and storing contacts is the biggest draw of LinkedIn, while it’s also a good platform for advertising and recruiting new employees.
