If you’re addicted to business networking site LinkedIn you’ll be pleased to learn you can now access it on the go.

The world’s largest networking site has launched a new application this week which means you can now access all your favourite LinkedIn tools from the comfort of your Blackberry. The application features all the popular aspects of LinkedIn including network updates, messaging, search, connections and invitations. It also gives you the chance to use the “reconnection” tool which suggests possible new business contacts for your company. iPhone users were first introduced to the application 18 months ago, which has left many confused as to why it’s taken so long to build a Blackberry version. While networking events are great for talking to people specifically in your industry, networking shouldn’t just be limited to these events. You should see every venue every day as a networking event and act accordingly. OK – we’re not saying just walk up to a random stranger in the street and start blabbering on about how great your business is! That would just be weird and alarming! The new initiative has been designed to help people get fighting fit by incorporating networking with a 1 hour walking tour of the streets of Liverpool city centre. The tours have guides who inform you on every aspect of the city’s business history, which could help you when it comes to negotiating future business deals. When you go to a networking event it’s important to portray a slick, successful, professional image but there’s something which is even more essential than this…. you need to be yourself!

There’s no point pretending to be something that you’re not because eventually the truth will come out and you’ll end up being very red faced and minus several very important business contacts. Many people try to be themselves but can get lost in the corporate speak which they think will attract business contacts – this is not the case! Spouting into technical jargon while speaking to a “non-techie” will alienate them and will leave them with a cold, confused taste in their mouth. (more…)

Washington Chamber of Commerce takes a different approach to networking

Picture the scene: men and women battling it out over computer games. It sounds like a typical night out at the pub, doesn’t it? In fact, it’s actually a networking event for small American businesses.

Men and women from all over Washington have been gathering to play computer games, while swapping business cards and exchanging important advice at the same time. The alternative networking events are being held by the Puyallup/Sumner Chamber of Commerce as a change to their weekly doughnuts and coffee mornings. The events began 2 years ago but the Chamber felt it was time for a change. (more…)

Google set to launch into social networking

Fresh from the news that more and more SMEs are using social networking for business purposes, Google have announced plans to launch a similar programme to compete with the likes of Facebook and MySpace.

The Financial Times reports that the search engine giant is planning to add features to it’s already popular Gmail service which would mirror aspects of other social media sites. These would include allowing users to aggregate the updates of their various contacts and creating a stream of notifications, similar to those on Facebook. Google have attempted to get into the social networking world before but with little success. (more…)
